When trying to find Washington D.C. auditions, Washington-DC actors must have a photo of themselves. If you are starting out - start with a picture that you have done yourself. But, you will need to update your photos with a professional at some point if you are serious about getting into the business.

Some good resources for finding auditions in Washington D.C. is auditions.com. Here you can access audition information and the latest news on Washington D.C auditions.

Things to keep in mind at any audition. There are different types of headshots. The following should be discussed with your photographer:

· How should you look?
· What to wear & not wear?
· What different poses there are and which poses are better for television or film

Always arrive at an audition fifteen minutes early. Casting is a hectic process, and things are always changing, so it is always better to be early than late. Do not dress in any costume unless asked to, but dress in attire that best suits the role you are auditioning for. When you first arrive, report directly to the casting assistant.

The survival kit for audition is as follows.
· Your Head Shot, Resume and Your Sides (If you get your sides in advance, sometimes you will get them days in advance, use that time to prepare.)
· A solid monologue. (most likely you won't be asked to perform a monologue, but it's good to have one ready.)
· Comfortable but presentable clothing that represents the part you are auditioning for. It is very important to enter the audition as close to "type" as you can.
· Water. Make sure you take some with you and you're not thirsty when it's your time to audition. Being thirsty will not help you at all.

When called into the audition room, enter the room, smile and introduce yourself to the casting director. Hand the assistant your head shot with your resume attached to the back. Announce the audition piece you will be performing and begin when you are ready. Do not wait for the word "action" or any other sign from the casting director. With Washington D.C. auditions as well as any other audition, just be confident and begin your audition after you have introduced yourself and you know your audience is ready. Thank the casting director when you have finished and leave immediately.

If you are acting in any city, your goal should be to join the unions like SAG (Screen Actors Guild) or AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Arts.) Keep an eye out in local papers and trade magazines for open call advertisements. If you fit the bill, try it out. It can never hurt your career and you never know whose attention you might catch.
